Localization (l10n)

Internationalization (l18n)

Globalization (g11n)

Localizability (l12y)

But what does it all mean?

In this business, there are so many alphanumeric acronyms that it can be really difficult to know what they mean. These terms are frequently abbreviated to acronyms where the number stands for the number of letters between the first and the last letters in the word. So "l10n" means that there are 10 letters between the first l and the last n. "i18n" means that there are 18 letters between the first i and the last n.

So where is the line between some of these terms, like i18n and l10n, for example?

W3.org said it best:

"Internationalization is the design and development of a product, application or document content that enables easy localization for target audiences that vary in culture, region, or language.

Localization refers to the adaptation of a product, application or document content to meet the language, cultural and other requirements of a specific target market (a locale)."
